Safiyah comes to New Deal Strategies from City Hall, where she was the Director of Scheduling and Assistant Press Secretary in the Office of the First Lady Chirlane McCray. Day-to-day, Safiyah managed First Lady McCray’s dynamic schedule, drafted press releases, and handled operational logistics ahead of interviews and speaking engagements. In this role Safiyah developed an applied understanding of public policy, with an emphasis on addressing mental healthcare inequality through legislation informed by race, gender, (dis)ability and class. Prior to joining the First Lady’s team, Safiyah cultivated experience in grassroots movements through volunteer work on a number of progressive campaigns across New York City, including Sandy Nurse’s successful campaign for City Council, as well as Maya Wiley’s bid for Mayor.
Immediately after graduating from Haverford College, Safiyah taught Economics at a boarding school with students and faculty from over 47 countries around the world. A product of New York City’s public schools, she grew up in Flatbush, Harlem, and the Lower East Side.
